Lawmakers demand answers on delayed pay for discharged trans troops

Federal

Seven House Democrats have asked Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to explain reported delays in separation pay owed to transgender service members removed under the federal military ban. In a September 24 committee release, the lawmakers cited reporting that at least a dozen former troops had not received the full funds they were owed.

The lawmakers requested payment timelines by military branch, anonymized records showing amounts owed and paid, and relevant processing guidance. They asked the Defense Department to respond by October 14. The letter and committee statement document an inquiry, not a payment resolution or a court ruling. The department response and current status of individual payments were not verified in the release.

Withholding or delaying earned separation pay can threaten housing and financial stability after an exclusionary discharge. Trans service members deserve both the compensation promised to them and a fair chance to serve. This inquiry does not itself change a state score or establish a new military policy.
