Fifth arrest made after transphobic assault in Asturias
Spanish Civil Guard investigators have arrested a fifth suspect in the January assault of a trans woman in Piedras Blancas, Asturias, El País reported on September 20. The woman needed hospital care after the attack. Two suspects were arrested in April, two in June, and the fifth in recent days.
The five men, ages 18 to 20, are suspected of hate-crime, injury, threat, and damage offenses with an alleged discriminatory motive. These are allegations, not convictions. The Asturias hate-crime prosecutor coordinated the investigation.
The arrest is a meaningful law-enforcement response to serious anti-trans violence. One local case does not establish a durable national change to Spain’s safety, legal, healthcare, immigration, affordability, employment, language, or community scores. Trans people need both accountability for attacks and safety in daily life.
