Federal trans youth care funding restrictions reach their effective date
Federal
October 13 is the effective date specified in the federal rule excluding federal Medicaid funding for puberty blockers, hormone therapy and surgery for gender dysphoria in patients under 18, with a corresponding CHIP restriction for those under 19. A limited transition permits federal matching for existing hormone therapy for up to six months; it does not extend to puberty blockers or surgery. The restriction targets federal reimbursement, leaving states able to fund care with their own money. Mental-health coverage remains. CMS announced the rule in August, not today. Lawsuits challenging it remain distinct from this effective-date milestone; this report does not establish a final merits ruling or patient-level service interruptions. Cutting public financing creates serious barriers for low-income trans young people.
