Federal complaint targets South Kingstown trans student protections

Rhode Island

America First Legal sent the U.S. Departments of Justice and Education a September 21 complaint asking them to investigate South Kingstown School District’s policy for transgender and gender-expansive students. The group objects to provisions on names, pronouns, facilities, and parent notification. It filed a similar complaint concerning North Kingstown in July.

The complaint is an advocacy request, not a finding that the district broke the law or proof that either federal agency has opened an investigation. Local reporter Steve Ahlquist documented The Womxn Project’s response at the Rhode Island Commission on Prejudice and Bias. Its director warned that sustained challenges are frightening affected students and families.

Schools should protect trans students’ dignity, privacy, and access to education. Rhode Island’s eight state score dimensions remain unchanged: this complaint has not altered state law or the districts’ policies. The universal warning about federal action still applies.
