Administration asks Supreme Court to lift protection for trans prison care

Federal

The Trump administration asked the U.S. Supreme Court on September 28 to pause a lower-court order requiring the Bureau of Prisons to continue gender-affirming care for people in federal custody while litigation continues. The emergency application seeks permission to enforce restrictions on hormones, surgery, and social accommodations. Mental-health therapy would remain available under the challenged policy.

For incarcerated trans people, interrupting medically indicated care can cause serious harm. A federal district judge ordered continued care, and the administration is asking the Supreme Court to suspend that protection. The application is not a ruling; the Court has not been reported to have granted the request.

This federal dispute does not by itself change any state score or establish a new final policy status. Its nationwide reach and the vulnerability of people in custody warrant close attention.
