UN rights chief warns Portugal against proposed rollback of trans protections
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has urged Portugal’s parliament to withdraw or revise proposed restrictions on gender recognition and gender-affirming care. He warned that the proposals could pathologize gender identity and undermine trans people’s rights to privacy, autonomy, health, and non-discrimination.
The bills remain proposals and have not changed Portuguese law. Portugal’s country scores therefore remain unchanged. The national push is still a serious warning: if enacted, restrictions on legal recognition or healthcare would require an immediate regrade.
